Today we celebrate our nationâs 234th birthday. Our nation was founded on divine principles. Even Thomas Payne, who was an agnostic, acknowledged that without some kind of divine influence, we would not be a nation. If we read the founding documents and writings by our founding fathers, our nation was birthed in the idea that, as a people we would achieve the highest levels of success that the world has ever known.
Over the years, people have used the freedom we have to justify any and all actions. Freedom is not a freedom to do as we wish. Our liberty is not a liberty without law. We are a free country because our laws allow every citizen to achieve the limits of their abilities. Our real freedom is our equal access to opportunity.
In our text, James describes to us a life that is enslaved by sin. Then he describes what truly sets a man free; what he calls the perfect law of liberty. This seemingly contradictory concept is what truly set us free. Law seems to limit, and liberty implies freedom. A world without law would not yield greater freedom, but would result in chaos.
What then is this perfect law of liberty? It allows us to see ourselves as we really are. We can see ourselves in our sin and falling short of His glory. It also reveals to us what we might be. It opens our eyes to the possibilities of life; beyond failure and frustration. The law of Moses told us what we should not do. Thou shalt notâ¦. The perfect law of Jesus Christ tells us what we CAN do. There perfect law says that the Spirit of the Lord is upon us.
The perfect law takes us back to the face of our beginning and reminds us of the potential that the Lord had for our life at our birth. It is the law that enables us to be a better person.
Liberty is not freedom from restraint or law. The only liberty is one that frees us to commune with God, freedom to bring our hurts before Him, freedom to seek His face.
The perfect law is one that does not condemn, but lifts us up and shows how much better our life can be.
Preceding this message, Dr. James Hughes greets the congregation and describes how truly blessed we are as a nation under God.
